Submarine mountain

An underwater mountain (seamount) is a mountain rising from the bottom of the ocean and sea level not reached. It is not an island. They are typically formed by a extinct volcano with steep slopes where the ocean has a depth of 1000 to 4000 m. They are defined by oceanographs as being independent structures reaching at least 1000 m above the ocean floor. The peaks are often found hundreds to thousands of feet below the surface and thus belong to the deep sea. It is estimated that there are 100,000 seamounts, and only a few of them have been studied. Seamounts exist in different shapes and sizes, and follow a solid schedule of growth, activity, and death. Recently, several active seamounts have been studied, for example Loihi, located in the Hawaiian islands. The location of the main seamounts Also see
