Daniel Julius Bernstein (also known as djb; born October 29, 1971) is a German-American mathematician, crypto analyst, and programmer. He is professor of mathematics and computer science at the Eindhoven University of Technology and research professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Bernstein is famous for his proprietary software qmail and djbdns, and he is also a great advocate of license-free software.

Bernstein replaced the SMTP, POP3 and IMAP protocol Internet Mail 2000. However, Internet Mail 2000 has never been what Bernstein hoped for.
