In December 1880, Geok Tepe was attacked by 6,000 Russians led by General Mikhail Skobelev against the 25,000 defenders. The siege of Geok Tepe lasted 23 days, after which the city was conquered. Hundreds of people were killed by the initial explosion, and many others in the fighting that followed. In the end, the defenders together with another 40,000 civilians fled the desert, chased by the cavalry of General Skobelev.
