Idwal Iwrch ap Cadwaladr

Idwal ap Cadwaladr, known as Ituvellus in Latin and Judwald in English, also known as Idwal Iwrch, the Capriolo (650 - 720), was ruler of the Kingdom of Gwynedd from 682 to his death.

After Cadwaladr's death, Gwynedd's story enters a dark and uncertain stage. Idwal's nickname suggests that he was of small stature. For historians, he was not involved in any major event, but he devoted himself to internal issues. However, in the face of the rising power of Mercia's kingdom, Idwal might have been involved in a series of raids against the Mercia itself, during the reign of Coenred, carried by the neighboring Powys kingdom. These raids, however, seem to have been isolated episodes, not attributable to a war.
