Johannes van der Corput

Johannes Gualtherus van der Corput (Rotterdam, September 4, 1890 - Amsterdam, September 16, 1975) was a Dutch mathematician who worked in the field of analytical number theory.

Career

In 1923, Van der Corput became professor at the University of Groningen and in 1946 at the Gemeente Universiteit Amsterdam. Through his efforts to maintain the functioning of the University of Groningen during the war years he often encountered conflict with the occupying power. Van der Corput tried to call on his fellow professors during the years of occupation to form a common front, but an effective opposition has never come to fruition. He was co-founder of the Mathematical Center (CWI) in Amsterdam, of which he became the first director. Since 1953, he worked in the United States at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Among his students were Jurjen Koksma and Jan Popken. Also see Source Externe link
