Mbone

Mbone, an abbreviation for multicast backbone, was an experimental backbone for multicast IP traffic over the Internet, developed in the early 1990s. Requires specialized hardware and software. It is evolved to connect networks with multicast capabilities over the Internet.

Mbone is currently a common practice for shared communication such as videoconferences and shared collaboration spaces. It is not usually connected with ISPs, but more with universities and research institutes. Other projects like Abilene Network's Internet2 have made Mbone obsolete.

The Mrouters are the routers that are at the confines of the islands that support multicast and are responsible for creating and managing the tunnels that connect the other multicast islands. Voices correlateemodify wikitesto
