Papurio

Papurio (Latin: Papurius or Papyrius or Papirius; Greek: Παπούριος) was a fortress in Isauria, used in imperial times as a prison. Stored by wikitesto Originally it was a hill of the Issauria that was chosen by the brigand Papirio who fortified it; was known as Castellum Papirii and from this terrorized surrounding areas.

The fortress passed to Papyrus's son, Indigo Cottunes, who continued his father's brigand activity. In 469 the magister militum for Orientem Zenone (later emperor) sent troops to try to slash him out of the fort.

In 478 Verina was imprisoned. The widow of Emperor Leo I had in fact hired a slayer to kill the influential general Illo; The Zenone emperor had been forced to send his father-in-law into custody in Papurio.

In 479 there was sent Marciano, son of the Roman emperor of West Antemio, who had rebelled against Emperor Zenone, but had been defeated by General Illo. Shortly after his arrival, the prisoner managed to escape the prison. In 483 Illo rebelled at Zenone, went to Papurio to release Verina to crown him with his chosen, the usurper Leonzio; Verina was again locked in the prison-fortress, and died shortly thereafter. Zenone's forces succeeded in defeating the rebels, and in 484, Illo and his supporters (including Leonzio and Indigo) were besieged in the Issauric fortress; the siege lasted four years, until, in 488, Papurio fell for treason of Indigo.
