Stored by wikitestoNarsarsuaq was the most important center of the island at the time of the Vikings, especially in the vicinity of Brattahlíð where Erik the Red lived; the settlement decayed with the end of Viking rule in the 15th century.
In 1941, the United States built here the base of Bluie West One, which continued to grow until Air Base Thule offered a better coverage: in 1951, the United States and Denmark reached an agreement that both would oversee the base; in 1958 Americans abandoned it. The Danish reopened in 1959 and now also serves international flights from Iceland and Denmark and occasionally small flights from Goose Bay (Canada) and Reykjavik.
