Several years have passed since Belgarion came back victorious from the confrontation with God the Torak, and in the West the presence of the Globe Guard and the King of Riva brought peace. Belgarion's friends have returned to their lives and the Globe stays silent in the sword of Riva; only a cloud clouds this serenity; still the King of Riva has no heir. The thing worries all the rulers to ask Polgara to intervene.
Belgarion's aunty then comes to Riva where, thanks to her knowledge and to the help of Cousin's cousin, the problem is solved; but the solution has given way to a new set of events, someone does not want the King of Riva to have heirs and the solution seems to be to quench the queen.
The heir comes to light for the joy of all the kingdoms of the West, but a foe hitherto hidden has kidnapped the newborn Prince of Riva.
