Charles Michel Edgard Walthère, named Walthère de Selys Longchamps was a younger son of physicist and senate president Michel-Edmond de Selys Longchamps. He married Marie Joséphine Davignon (1848-1911) and they had six children. They gave these children numerous first names they found in gods and heroes of Greek and Roman mythology and history:

Walthère de Selys graduated as a doctor in law (1870) at Liège University and lived the life of a landowner. He also traveled a lot.

At the age of fifty he began to become politically active. He was elected Senator for the district of Namur in 1896, when his father also sat in the senate. In 1900 he was elected senator for the constituency of Namur-Dinant-Philippeville and retained this mandate until his death. His son Hector de Selys Longchamps later became Senator.
