On 13 June 1545 Ortiz de Retez, at San Juan's command, left the port of Tidore, an island of the East Indies, reaching the northern coast of New Guinea, on which he ventured to the mouth of Mamberamo. He took possession of the land on behalf of the Spanish monarchy, giving the island the name with which it is still known. Named Nueva Guinea because of the resemblance of local residents with those of Western Guinea. Notemodify wikitesto
