Baltasar Barreira

Member of the Society of Jesus, was the first missionary to reach Angola (1879), where in about ten years he was able to baptize about 20,000 people; from 1605 he took care of the evangelization of Sierra Leone, where he succeeded in converting the indigenous sovereign and, therefore, his subjects.

She was opposed to the slave trade; he unnecessarily sought to establish a seminary in Africa for the formation of indigenous clergy. He returned home in 1609.
