George Bentham

George Bentham (Stoke (Devon), September 22, 1800 - London, September 10, 1884) was an English botanist.

Bentham was born as son of engineer Samuel Bentham (1757-1831), who was a brother of philosopher Jeremy Bentham. He did not have formal education, but could speak French, German and Russian at his seventh. And at an older age, during his stay in Sweden he learned Swedish. After that he stayed for a while in Montpellier.

George Bentham became interested in botanical studies. During his study at Angoulême he received a copy of A. P. de Candolle's Flore française, which made him interested in the analytical tables to identify plants. He tried this on the first plant he saw, and tried to identify any plant he encountered. When he visited London in 1823, he came into contact with some English botanists. Bibliography

Bentham received the Royal Society Royal Society in 1859 and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1862.
