Japanese Zelkova

The Japanese zelkova (Zelkova serrata) is an asian tree of the elephant family (Ulmaceae), which best thrives in low flow streams with moist fertile soil. The distribution area is China, Japan and Korea. In Japan, this tree appears to 1220 meters above sea level, especially on the islands of Kyushu and Honshu. Many ancient Japanese temples have been made from the wood of this tree. The bark is smooth and light gray and flakes or leaves at mature trees, making it visible beige spots. The leaves are eirond and 12 cm long and 5 cm wide with six to thirteen sharp teeth on both sides. In spring, the tree carries green male and female flowers. The pollination is done by the wind. The fruit is 5 mm tall. The tree can grow up to 40 meters and is deciduous. Media files
