Joseph Bertrand

Joseph Bertrand

Joseph Louis François Bertrand (Paris, March 11, 1822 - Paris, April 5, 1900) was a French mathematician who specialized in numerical theory, geometry, probation and thermodynamics.

Bertrand was a professor of the École Polytechnique and the Collège de France. He made a statement in 1845 that for each n & gt; 3 lies between n and 2n - 2. This so-called Bertrand postulate was proved by Pafnoeti Tshebjev in 1850.

Bertrand translated the works of German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss regarding the theory of estimates and the method of smallest squares in French.

In 1884 Bertrand was elected as a member of the Académie française.
