Research Institute for Development


Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) is a French research institute that focuses on research and the management of scientific programs relating to the relationship between man and his environment. It is a public scientific and technological research institute under the control of the French government. The missions of IRD are research, consultancy and post-graduate education.

IRD consists of five scientific departments dealing with earth and the environment, living resources, society and health, expertise and consultancy and support and training of scientific communities in southern countries. More than 800 researchers and 1000 technicians participate in research programs focused on sustainable development. IRD has five branches in France and five in the French overseas territories. The organization is also active along the coasts of the Mediterranean, in Asia, in the Indian Ocean, in South America and in the Caribbean and in the islands of the Pacific Ocean. In total, IRD is active in over 40 countries.
