Jan Hepkes Wouda

Jan Hepkes Wouda (Surhuisterveen, November 4, 1862 - April 16, 1939) is the most famous Frisian leugen baron in Dutch folklore. He was a huiden buyer from Surhuisterveen. Wouda not only owned a large part of classical folk story motifs (especially large fish stories he happily liked himself) but he also invented dozens of lies. The stories are still known in Surhuisterveen and wide area.

The Frisian collectors Dam Jaarsma (1914-1991) and Ype Poortinga (1910-1985) unveiled large parts of Wouda's repertoire, which consisted of hundreds of stories. Poortinga also wrote a romanticized biography; based primarily on this repertoire.

In Surhuisterveen, since 1986, there has been a statue for Jan Hepkes Wouda, of Suze Boschma-Berkhout. Literature Also see
