Challant's Filiberto


Challant-Aymavilles (circa 1480 - 1517) (in French, Philibert de Challant-Aymavilles) was a noble valdostan belonging to the challant family of the Challant-Aymavilles branch and had the title of Counts of Challant.

Luigi's son of Challant-Aymavilles and Marguerite de La Chambre, at the death of his father in 1487, he was invested in the feuds of Graines, Andorno, Surpierre, Issogne and Châtillon and being still a child was under the tutelage of his cousin Giorgio di Challants-Varey. In those days Giorgio devoted, among other things, to the renovation of Issogne Castle, chosen as a residence by Filiberto and his mother, to create a prestigious home for his pupil.

At the death of his brother Giacomo he also inherited the fiefs of Aymavilles, Verrès, Ussel and Saint-Marcel.

He married in 1502 Louise d'Aarberg, daughter of Claudio d'Aarberg, ruler of princely rank of Valangin and Aarberg, and Guglielmetta de Vergy, receiving the feuds of Valangin and Bauffremont. From their marriage a single son Renato was born.

Under the Savoy he served as a councilor and ducal bishop (from 1487), Bard Castle between 1487 and 1517, Châtel-Argent castle between 1499 and 1513, armed captain of the Savoy (since 1496 ), bishop and Lieutenant General of the Aosta Valley between 1509 and 1517. In 1487 he was appointed by Charles I Knight of the Order of the Collar of Savoy (later called the Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation).
