Habiboellah Kalakani

Amir Habiboellah Kalakani (Pashto: حبیب الله کلکاني; Persian: حبیبالله کلکانی) (Kalakan, ca. 1890 - Kabul, November 3, 1929) was from Afghanistan until January 1929. He was contemptuously named Bache Saqqaw (son of a water carrier).

The Tajik Habiboellah was born in the Afghan region of Kalakan as a son of a poor water carrier. He did not receive any education and was raised strictly Islamic. In addition, he was under the influence of fundamentalists.

The efforts of progressive King Amanoellah Khan to reform his country and to engage in trade relations with Western powers led to various uprisings in Afghanistan. At the height of those revolt in 1929, King Amanoellah was traveling abroad. As a captain of the uprising in Kalakan, Habiboellah Kalakani entered the Afghan capital Kabul on January 17, 1929. There he forced King Amanoellah and his successor Inajatoellah to the throne. He introduced the sharia as legislation. In the 9 months when he was king of Afghanistan, he was transgressed in a variety of ways. In October 1929, he was rescued with British aid by the late king Nadir Sjah. Habiboellah was later called back to Kabul. There he was imprisoned and executed.
