Ipe Annes Hooites

Ipe Annes Hooites

Ipe Annes Hooites (Hoogezand, September 11, 1812 - 18 February 1891) was a Dutch shipowner, shipbuilder and mayor.

Hooites owned a sawmill, sailing and mastering, and a forge farm. He continued his father's shipyard in Hoogezand and started a second in Foxholsterbosch around 1850. Hooites later became shipowner. Following the parliamentary survey of the Dutch merchant navy (1874-1875), he reported that he did not earn much as a shipowner, but that he was doing this primarily to keep his other companies running. Between 1870 and 1880 his shipowner, the number of ships involved, was the largest of the country. From 1866 to 1878 he was Mayor in his birthplace, besides Statenlid.

In 1857 Hooites made a mansion on a part of the site of former castle Vredenburg (now: Meint Veninga Street 115). The initials of Hooites and his wife Geessien Roelfs Meursing (1816-1858) are placed in the styles next to the front door.
