Cave of Montescotano

The cave of Montescotano is a cave located between the municipalities of Villa Castelli and Ceglie Messapica, in the province of Brindisi.

It was discovered in 1979 by the "Martini speleological group", which, after releasing the first cave-covered cave, discovered a six meter tunnel ending in another room, where many lichens were found, many of which were intact. The presence of these finds allowed us to hypothesize that the cave had been used as a pagan worship site before Messapic and then Roman, between the 2nd century BC. and the 3rd century AD.

About 400 meters southwest of the cave are the remains of a settlement of the 4th century AD. (late-Roman era). Voices correlateemodify wikitesto
