Elias Phisoana Ramaema

Elias Phisoana Ramaema (1933) was a statesman and military from Lesotho. Colonel Elias Ramaema was part of the Military Council, set up after the coup of General Major Justin Metsing Lekhanya in January 1986. General Major Lekhanya became the Chairman of the Military Council and thus all executive power was in his hands.

In the early 1990s, the tensions between Lekhanya and King Moshoeshoe II of Lesotho rose high, after which the king fled abroad and was thrown away. His successor, Letsie III of Lesotho, did not seem to be in good standing with Lekhanya. On May 2, 1991, Colonel Ramaema put an end to Lekhanya's dictatorship and himself took over the presidency of the Military Council. Later he was promoted to General Major. In 1992 he granted the return of Moshoeshoe as a "citizen". Ramaema made a start to the restoration of democracy in the kingdom of Lesotho. In March 1993, the country held parliamentary elections and thereby became the largest party to the Basotho Congress Party (Basotho Congress Party) of Ntsu Mokhehle. In April 1993, Mokhehle became prime minister and ended the military dictatorship in Lesotho.

In 1999 Ramaema was right.
