Nilo-Saharaanse talen

Map giving an impression of the spread of the Nilo-Saharan languages in Africa.

The Nilo-Saharan languages are one of four African language families. They are spoken in Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, and north of Tanzania. The name of the family is derived from the fact that the language area spans a large part of the Sahara and of the Nile River.

The language family is diverse and linguists do not even agree on the precise internal classification of the subfamilies. However, an important distinction is, in any event, between Saharan languages (for example Kanuri) and the Nilot languages (which include languages like Maa (Masai) and Dinka).
