Theodo III

Theodo from the genus Agilolfingen was up to 724 Duke of Bavaria.

He wanted to make a Christian land of his pagan duchy, as a result of the Longo War of the Longobards, but at the same time prevented him from getting into Frankish hands. He was the first duke who would make Bavaria a factor of importance and thus hindering Franconian expansion. In 716 he went to Rome and asked Pope Gregory II for missionaries. The pope had ears there because it would also strengthen his position. Theodo's premature death in 724 ended his plans for the time being, but his successor Hugbert would continue his policy. Bavaria thus escaped the fate of Pagan Saxony, which would later impose Christianity in a terrible war.
