Willem Alphonse (from Huussel and) Mijsberg


Willem Alphonse (from Huusel and) Mijsberg (Willemstad, 1659 - there, 1728) was a Dutch mayor. His brother Michiel Mijsberg has also been Mayor of the fortified city of Willemstad, from 1743 to 1747.

Mijsberg, also spelled as Mijsbergh, was mayor of the fortified city of Willemstad from 1724 to 1725. He used to be a master carpenter in this city and was involved as a businessman in the purchase and processing of beer. He lived on the south side of the church ring in Willemstad and had the De Swa brewery.

He had been active in the poor care for a long time and managed from 1684 to 1726 as treasurer (rendant) the poor account of the needy and being in the city. He was also responsible for the care and relocation of the childless parents in either the orphanages or foster homes for several years. In 1722 he was appointed as mayor for this purpose. In 1724 he was also appointed elder in the church.

In addition to his work, he became active in politics and had been in town for a number of years before becoming mayor. As mayor, he, like his brother, was responsible for extending the fortifications of the fortress and the construction of a number of forts around Willemstad after the eighties war.

He died in 1728 in his hometown where he was buried on January 23rd of that year.
