The river is born in the village of Szalafő on the hills of the Őrség park on the border between Hungary-Austria-Slovenia, and flows from east to west in the provinces of Vas and Zala where it crosses the cities of Őriszentpéter, Zalalövő, Zalaegerszeg . After Zalaegerszeg the river deviates north, then comes to the village of Zalabér, reverses its course and heads south until it enters the marshy area of Kis-Balaton (small Balaton). Here you enter the Hídvéger pond before and then the Feneker lake, where it flows out to Lake Balaton to the south of Keszthely.
