The salt box is a virtual locket where road managers in the Netherlands can volunteer to share their straw salt in order to keep the most important roads in the Netherlands safe. There are nine regional saltballs and one national salt booth. The salt remains in storage with the relevant road administrator and is reallocated by the salt box if necessary.
When there is a (national) shortage of straw salt, the Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment can decide to initiate salt bins. She will do this in consultation with the Interprovincial Consultation, the Association of Dutch Municipalities and the Water Resources Union. The salt box is set when:
In winter 2010, the salt box was put into operation for the first time. Then 300 municipalities had signed up, no more than 200 municipalities in 2011.
