Dambreuk at Baia Mare

The water flows through Baia Mare

The hamlet at Baia Mare was an environmental disaster near Baia Mare in Romania, where cyanide in the river Someş came to the gold mining company Aurul, a joint venture of the Romanian government and the Australian company Esmeralda Exploration.

The dambreuk took place on January 30, 2000 and 100,000 m of cyanide polluted water spread over farmland and then in the Someş. The waters reached the Tisza and Danube rivers and caused major fish mortality in Romania, Hungary and the former Yugoslavia.
