Door grids in Hindeloopen
A door lattice is a cast iron door ornament that is often present in the front door of old farms and mansions, although its use has not previously been limited to these houses: door lattices can also be present in canal houses and smaller houses. The purpose is on the one hand the use as anti-burglar and on the other hand to show off. Behind the door lattice is an inwardly open window that can be opened for ventilation or for someone who bites.
Door grids often have a decorative ornament in the middle. Often this is a horse head or a cow head, but also other decorations were made to confirm the status of the resident. These decorations were also often painted colorful. During the Art Nouveau period, the tradition of using door grids was continued. During this period, wrought iron was also used.
Nowadays door lattices are also made of cast aluminum. That material is lighter and weather-resistant than iron. Also see
