Grotenberg

The Grotenberg is a landmark in Peel on the old route between Deurne and Venray in the Dutch province of Limburg. Shelter church

On the Grotenberg, located on Venray's territory, from 1649 there was a barn church where the Catholic residents of Deurne under the guidance of Pastor Gerard Jacobs could confess their faith. The church was abandoned when around 1700 space was created for the construction of a shelter church at the Low Church near the then village hall of Deurne. On the Grotenberg since the 19th century there has been a memorial chapel reminiscent of the prosecution of the Catholics in North Brabant. Go

Near the Grotenberg, an oak was planted in 1976 by friends and relatives of the author Herman Maas. The tree, with memorial stone, is just on Venray's territory as a silent protest against the town of Deurne, which the writer did not give a street name for his political background. Pictures
