The New Street (French: Rue Neuve) is a shopping street in Brussels, which runs north-south, from Rogier Square to Muntplein. She is about 600m long.
On the side of the Rogierplein is the covered shopping center City 2, partly at the place where the department store Au Bon Marché used to be. Next door is the Galeria Inno. At this place, the department store "L'Innovation" burned out on 22 May 1967, with more than 300 deaths falling. Three years later, the current building was erected, which currently houses Galeria Inno and Media Markt (both belonging to the German METRO Group).
In the Nieuwstraat, there are also clothing stores, such as C & A, HEMA and WE. More expensive clothing stores are more concentrated around the Louise Avenue.
In the Nieuwstraat, the price per square meter of shopping space is one of the highest in Belgium (in a shared place with the Meir in Antwerp). However, the upper floors are usually uninhabited, and sometimes by the store device, even completely inaccessible. As a result, the street is almost dead at night. The city of Brussels attempts to re-promote housing in the Nieuwstraat in recent years.
The Nieuwstraat is also the most expensive street in the Belgian versions (both Dutch and French) of the board game Monopoly. 50° 51′ 9″ NB, 4° 21′ 20″ OL
