It would not have been, unlike its predecessor, a puppet king in the hands of the Vikings of the Great Danish Army, who, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, headed north in 873/874. Halfdan Ragnarsson would regain Northumbria in the south for the Danes (the territory that corresponded to the old Deira or to the Vichingo of Jörvík, between Humber and the Tees. Ricsige or his successor Ecgberht II instead controlled Bernicia, between the Tees and Forth.
