Sancho Sanchez van Gascony

Sancho II Sanchez of Gascony (about 800 - 864) was the duke of Gascony.

Sancho, in 836 successor to his brother Aznar, became an independent ruler in Gascony, against Pepijn I of Aquitaine.

After the death of Pepijn I in 838, Sancho welcomed his son Pepijn II. Even after Louis had defeated the Pious Pope II, Sancho continued his own dominion. In 848 he occupied Bordeaux after the Vikings left the city. He called himself "Duke of Gascony". Shortly afterwards, however, he was forced to give up his independent politics and still occupied 850 for Karel de Kale. Shortly afterwards, Sancho benefited from being captured by a Moorish captain, and Karel was negotiating his release. As a rescue, Sancho delivered in 852 Pepin II to Karel.

Due to his patronage, his father was also called Sanchez, but hardly anything is known about it. Possibly this was a son of Wolf II. Sancho was probably the father of Sancho Mittara.
