Worship of the Wise Men (ca. 1435)
Jacques Daret (about 1400/1405 - about 1468) was a Flemish art painter. He was born in Tournai, where he lived and worked. Daret belongs to the Flemish Primitives. biography
Together with Rogier van der Weyden, Daret followed a four-year course of painting in Robert Campin's studio since 1428. However, he has been part of Campin's household for ten years. In 1432 he was registered as a master in the Tournai guild. Later he himself took students into account.
Outside Tournai Daret was employed in Arras (Atrecht), where he, among other things, applied polychromia to wooden images. This kind of assignment was accepted by many painters during that period.
Although Daret has been very active as an artist, only four panels can be safely attributed to him:
These panels form the painted shutters of a sculpted retable.
