Gulf of Biafra

Map of the Gulf of Biafra

The Gulf of Biafra or Biafra Bay or Bonny Gulf (Bight of Bonny or Bight of Biafra) is a vast creek of the Atlantic Ocean at the coast of West Africa. It is part of the largest Gulf of Guinea and stretches from the Niger River Delta to Cape Lopez in Gabon. On the gulf overlook Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. The islands of Bioko (belonging to Equatorial Guinea) and the islands of the state of São Tomé and Príncipe emerge.

Following the events of the Biafra war in 1972, the Nigerian government renamed Bonny Gulf.
