The degree to which concrete can resist tensile forces is called tensile strength. Due to its stony structure, concrete is not well able to absorb tensile forces. Only in special situations may the tensile strength of concrete be charged.

The concrete tensile strength is related to the characteristic cube pressure strength of the concrete. According to the Dutch Standard (NEN) 6720, the calculation value of tensile strength is: f.b = 0.7 * (1.05 + 0.05 * f'ck) / 1.4. For example, the value of tensile strength and f'ck is the characteristic cube pressure strength of the concrete.
