Cord rig is the name given by archaeologists to a cultivation system practiced in prehistory and then to the British plateau. The shovels were used to excavate raised ground benches for cultivating with drainage channels along the hips.
Where it survives, it consists of rough terrain ridges of about 1 m wide and 0.15 m high. In the fields the ridges are separated from the low bushes of about 0.5 hectares or about 1 acre (4,000 m). The presence of cord rig suggests the proximity of settlements that can be identified by aerial photography.
