Lorenzo Bini Smaghi

Lorenzo Bini Smaghi (Florence, November 29, 1956) is an Italian economist. Since June 2005 he is a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB).

Lorenzo Bini Smaghi is a descendant of some ancient Tuscan noble houses and of the sacred Robertus Bellarminus, who played a central role in the contra formation. He grew up in Brussels (Belgium), where he obtained his middle school diploma in 1974 at the Lycee Francais de Bruxelles. In 1978 he graduated from the Université Catholique de Louvain. In 1980 he obtained a master's degree in economics at the University of Southern California and in 1988 a doctorate at the University of Chicago. In Belgium and the United States, he taught French and English very well.

In November 2011, it became known that it will resign at the ECB on 1 January 2012. He is succeeded by Frenchman Benoît Cœuré.
