Siegfried van Westerburg


Siegfried van Westerburg (? - April 7, 1297) was a German Archbishop of Cologne, Cologne, who held this position from 1275 until his death in 1297. biography

Siegfried was the second son of Count Siegfried IV van Runkel, his brother Hendrik died during the Battle of Woeringen. In March 1275 Westerburg was devoted to archbishop. The first act that Siegfried did was to eliminate excommunication about the city of Cologne. Around 1283 he chose Reinoud I van Gelre's side in the Limburg Succession War. During the Battle of Woeringen in 1288 he lost the battle and was imprisoned by Jan I of Brabant. He was soon transferred to Adolf V van Berg. During the elections to the German Emperor, he voted for his brother-in-law Adolf van Nassau. In 1297 Westerburg passed away and was followed by Archbishop by Wigbold I van Holte. Sources
