Small Water Gate (Delfzijl)

The Small Water Port or The Ruyter Gate is the smallest of the two water gates in Delfzijl. The gate thanks its name "De Ruyterpoort" to Michiel de Ruyter, who landed the West Indies fleet in Delfzijl in 1665.

Like the Great Water Gate, the Little Water Gate is a quay in the seaside. To protect Delfzijl from high tide, the Small Water Port can be closed with a manually operated turning door. As the gateway to the port of the port, the gate was last closed during the Siege of Delfzijl (1813-1814). Also see 53° 19′ 46″ NB, 6° 55′ 33″ OL
