In 1971/72, the 22nd season of the DDR League was played, the second class of the GDR. FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt and BSG Chemie Leipzig graduated immediately to the DDR Oberliga. The competition was extended considerably this year from two sets of fourteen clubs to five series with twelve clubs. The five group winners played a final round of which the top two graduated.
