The Finnish Democratic Republic (Finnish: Suomen kansanvaltainen tasavalta or Suomen kansantasavalta, Swedish: Democratic Republic of Finland) was a short-term Finnish government (1939-1940), which was dependent on and only recognized by the Soviet Union. It was used in name in the parts of finch carelia occupied by the Soviet Union during the winter war. The regime was also known as the Terijoki government (Finnish: Terijoen Hallitus, Swedish: Teriyaki Governments) because Terijoki was the first Finnish place conquered by the Soviet Red Army. The government is sometimes called the Kuusinen government (Finnish: Kuusisen hallitus) in Finnish historiography, to Otto Kuusinen. Officially, the government called the Finnish People's Government (Finnish: Suomen kansanhallitus).
The Soviet Union found that it was the only legitimate government for all of Finland that was capable of ending the Winter War and restoring peace. However, the Soviets gave up this interpretation by concluding peace with the Government of the Republic of Finland.
