Green Mars

Routes of Green Mars

In November 1975, the Moroccan prince Hassan II organized a Green Mars to Western Sahara, sending 350,000 Moroccans to the area.

Occupation Western Sahara

The action was intended to put Spain under pressure, which when the colonizer waved the scepter across Western Sahara. In addition, the march had to contribute to national unity and strengthen the authority of the princess. After two coups of the army in 1971 and 1972, attempting to bring the king to death, Hassan II had the strong need to restore his authority. Green Mars succeeded: Spain gave up the colony and Morocco annexed two thirds of Western Sahara, and holds that part of the desert to the present day largely.

This annexation is being challenged by the resistance movement Polisario, supported by Algeria. The United Nations decided to hold a parliamentary referendum, which refuses Morocco. Holiday
