Crown (optical phenomenon)

Solar crown

A crown is an optical phenomenon consisting of a colored ring surrounding the Sun.

It is formed by the presence of cloudy layers (such as semitransparent high densities) that are quite thin, both formed by liquid water droplets and ice crystals. For a crown to appear it is necessary that the droplets or ice crystals are roughly the same: if that does not happen, there will be an iridescence. It may appear in the presence of fog: in this case it is likely that the fog rises and dissolves within a short time.
