Gilgit (river)

The Gilgit (Urdu: دریائے گلگت, daryā-e Gilgit) is a river in northern Pakistan, in the west of the Gilgit-Baltistan region. The river flows eastwards through a dry, narrow valley, sequentially through the valleys of Ghizar and Ponial. She also flows along the same name of Gilgit.

The Gilgit originates south of the 3738 m high Shandur Pass, the main connection between Chitral and Gilgit over Hindu Raj mountains. This pass is on a wide plains and is known for its annual polo battle between the Chitral and Gilgit teams. The first part of the river is often called Ghizer or Ghizar and flows through the same valley. To the west of Gupis, the Ghiz Valley comes along with the Yasin Valley. From this point, the river is called Gilgit and is called the Ponial of Punyal.
