Greil Marcus was born in San Francisco and obtained a bachelor's degree in American Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked for a doctorate in political science.

His book, Lipstick Traces: a secret history of the 20th century (1989), sought for connections in a century of Western civilization. He pondered in this book that punkrock should be seen as a transhistory cultural phenomenon, Marcus investigated philosophical links between entities as diverse as medieval heretics, Dada, Situationists and Sex Pistols.
