Higaonna Kanryō

Kanryo Higaonna (Higashionna) (東 恩納 寛 量 (Higaonna Kanryō), Naha, March 10, 1853 - December 1915) was a karate Japanese master of karate. Higaonna Kanryō

He was a native of Nishi-shin-machi, Naha, (Okinawa). He was born into a family of merchants, whose main earnings was based on the sale of firewood; a very expensive commodity for the Kingdom of Ryūkyū. He was the founder of Naha-Te.

His family name is pronounced "Higaonna" in Okinawense, and "Higashionna" in Japanese. In the western language, the two variants are often interchangeed.

In the early 1860s he started studying martial arts under a master named Seisho Arakaki. At that time, the word karate was not a word of common use, and to refer to martial arts, the word Te ("hand") was often used. Sometimes you used the prefix referring to the place of origin such as: Naha-te, Shuri-te, or more simply Okinawa-te. Links externalize the wikitesto
