Jacques Bretel

Jacques Bretel (... - ...) was a French troublemaker, best known for his Le Tournoi de Chauvency opera.

The Tournoi de Chauvency is his only known and dated work. It is a 4500 verse poem that tells the story of a tournament held during the six days of a celebration given by Louis V, Count of Chiny in October 1285 to Chauvency-le-Château. It is undoubtedly a masterpiece of medieval French literature and, in any case, one of the best works of court proceedings of the period.

The Tournoi de Chauvency is kept in a manuscript at the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford. Links externalize the wikitesto
