Plymouth Colony

The Plymouth Colony was an English colony in North America that consisted of 1620 to 1691.

The colony was founded by the Pilgrim Fathers, who landed the Mayflower ship in 1620 in the present Plymouth, Massachusetts. Previously, they landed in Cape Cod Peninsula at present Provincetown, but decided not to stay there and to go by boat. The board was governed by the Mayflower Compact, which had signed all 41 men aboard the Mayflower. Nearly half of the settlers survived the first winter in Plymouth. Among the victims was their first governor, John Carver. To survive, they received help from chief Massasoit and Squanto's interpreter.

In 1691 the independent colonies in Massachusetts were merged into the Province of Massachusetts Bay. This ended the history of the Plymouth Colony. Also see
