Retrone

Riviera of Ponte San Michele in Vicenza

The Retrone is a 12 km long river in northern Italy, in the province of Vicenza. The river begins in Sovizzo as a confluence of two rivers: the Valdiezza and the Onte Mezzarolo. At the town of Vicenza, the river flows alongside the Bacchiglione. In Vicenza another Roman bridge over the river has been preserved.

In Roman times, not the Bacchiglione but the Retrone was the main river of Vicenza and Padua. The Retrone then flowed along Padua in the riverbed, whereafter the Brenta and now the Bacchiglione flow. With the floods of 539 and 1152, the course of several rivers in the area has changed significantly.
